Her voice is warm and intimate when diving into emotion, but she nails the biting irony Eliot wields against hypocrisy and snobbery. The pacing is deliberate, which might frustrate listeners expecting a brisk plot, but Eliot’s novel thrives on its meticulous social observation. That said, the sheer volume of characters and subplots can feel overwhelming at times—it’s easy to lose track of who’s who, especially in the first half. The production quality is pristine, though, with no distracting background noise or abrupt cuts. My biggest critique? Entwistle’s portrayal of Casaubon’s dry, pedantic tone occasionally veers into caricature, which risks undermining Eliot’s nuanced critique of intellectual arrogance. Still, this remains the definitive way to experience *Middlemarch*, a novel that rewards deep listening with a portrait of human folly and resilience that feels timeless.
