About This Audiobook

Jeffrey Eugenides’ *Middlesex* is a sprawling, genre-blending marvel—part family epic, part Greek tragedy, and part queer coming-of-age story, all woven into the life of Calliope Stephanides, born intersex in 1960s America. The novel’s genius lies in its refusal to simplify: it’s neither a medical case study nor a morality tale, but a rich, digressive exploration of destiny, biology, and the stories we tell to make sense of ourselves. Eugenides’ prose is lush yet precise, balancing dark humor with profound melancholy, and this audiobook adaptation makes it sing. Kristoffer Tabori’s narration is a masterclass in restraint and empathy; he doesn’t dramatize Callie’s turmoil into soap opera, but lets her quiet, introspective voice carry the weight of decades, from Detroit’s Greek immigrant enclaves to the queer underground of 1970s San Francisco. The result is an immersive experience that feels as intimate as a whispered secret and as expansive as a myth retold by Homer himself.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I approached *Middlesex* warily at first—another sprawling ‘great American novel’ trying to do too much? But Eugenides pulls it off with disarming grace. Tabori’s narration is a revelation; he doesn’t so much ‘perform’ the story as inhabit it, modulating his voice just enough to distinguish between Callie’s childhood innocence, her teenage desperation, and her adult self-reckoning without ever resorting to caricature. The audiobook’s pacing is deliberate, even slow, but that’s part of its charm—it luxuriates in the details of family history, like a patient unraveling a sweater to find the thread that explains everything. That said, the middle act drags slightly, and some of the historical tangents (the Detroit riots, the Turkish origin story) risk feeling like detours rather than essential context. Tabori’s voice is steady, but at times it lacks the fiery edge needed for the book’s more explosive moments—Callie’s confrontation with her body, for instance, feels tonally muted. Still, this is a stunning adaptation that honors the novel’s complexities while making its 21 hours fly by. If you’ve ever felt like an outsider in your own story, this audiobook might just give you the language to tell it.
