Katrin Fröhlich’s narration is the standout—her voice cuts through the dense prose with surprising nuance, whether she’s capturing Elise’s quiet introspection or the raucous energy of a cabaret crowd. The pacing never drags, though I did wish for a bit more resolution on one side plot involving a secondary character that fizzled out abruptly. The production quality is top-notch, with a rich soundscape that places you right in the middle of 1860s Paris, from the clatter of horse-drawn carriages to the murmur of French spoken in the streets. My only real complaint? The title (*Light and Shadows* in English) undersells how deliciously dark this book gets at times—it’s not just a pretty contrast, it’s a full-blown dive into the murky corners of ambition and survival. Fans of Sarah Dunant or Tracy Chevalier will eat this up, but I think it’s even better suited for listeners who want their historical fiction with a side of morally complex characters and unflinching realism. A hefty listen at 16 hours, but one that lingers long after the final note.
