More Than Friends

I’ll admit, I side-eyed the 17-hour runtime for what’s essentially three romances, but *More Than Friends* earns every minute—mostly. The standout here is the narration, which is so immersive it borders on ASMR. Allie Martina and Gideon Frost’s back-and-forth in the first story (*“Just Friends”*) had me rewinding scenes just to hear their chemistry again; their timing is *that* sharp. The production quality is flawless—no awkward pauses or volume mismatches, even with six narrators trading off. That said, the middle story (*“Benefits of Us”*) drags slightly in act two, with a conflict that feels manufactured compared to the organic tension of the others. And while Ava Lucas nails the sarcastic heroine, Ryan Stone’s delivery occasionally veers into *too* smooth, losing some of the character’s rough edges described in the text. Where Blanchard excels is in the *specificity* of these friendships. These aren’t vague “we’ve known each other forever” tropes—there’s a wedding planner and her client-turned-crush, a childhood best friend who’s *always* been the safe choice, a coworkers-with-benefits arrangement that’s a ticking bomb. The sex scenes are frequent but never gratuitous; they’re the culmination of *pages* of repressed longing. My only real gripe? The epilogues wrap things up *too* neatly, undercutting some of the earlier emotional rawness. But if you’re craving a friends-to-lovers fix with narration that’ll make your commute feel like a spa day (with extra spice), this is your book. Just maybe skip the middle story’s third act if you’re short on time—it’s the weakest link in an otherwise stellar chain.
