About This Audiobook

Mr. Macky Is Wacky! delivers a brisk, boisterous dive into classroom fun with a historical twist. What starts as a routine Presidents’ Day assignment at Ella Mentry School spirals into full-blown mayhem when the eccentric substitute teacher, Mr. Macky, shows up in an Abraham Lincoln beard and velvet suit—complete with dramatic monologues and fake spitballs. Dan Gutman’s signature blend of cheeky humor and schoolyard anarchy finds perfect form in this short audiobook, designed to hook reluctant listeners with its absurdity and heart. It’s the kind of story that doesn’t just celebrate holidays—it hijacks them with a grin. Jared Goldsmith’s narration is a masterclass in comic timing and vocal elasticity. He doesn’t just read the characters—he embodies their zaniness, giving Mr. Macky a booming, theatrical cadence that leans deliciously into melodrama, while the students squeak, whisper, and react with authentic kid-energy. The production is clean and lively, with subtle sound cues that enhance but never overwhelm. At under fifty minutes, this audiobook is ideal for short attention spans or car rides, offering a complete, satisfying arc without overstaying its welcome. A standout for families seeking humor with a hint of history—and for teachers needing a fresh way to make February memorable.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into Mr. Macky Is Wacky! expecting a light, silly kids’ story—and that’s exactly what I got, but with more charm than I anticipated. Jared Goldsmith’s performance elevated the whole experience. His Mr. Macky is delightfully over-the-top: part Shakespearean actor, part circus ringmaster, and 100% committed to the bit. I especially loved how he differentiated the kids’ voices—not with heavy accents, but with pitch and rhythm, making each one feel distinct without veering into caricature. The pacing is snappy, which keeps younger listeners engaged, and the production quality is crisp, with just enough ambient classroom sounds to feel immersive without being distracting. That said, there were moments when the humor leaned *too* heavily on slapstick—like the custodian getting covered in fake slime—to the point where it felt a bit repetitive. And while the historical nods are fun, they’re so thin that older kids might crave more substance. Still, for its intended audience (and runtime), it hits the sweet spot. As a parent, I appreciate that it doesn’t talk down to kids, and as an audiobook fan, I admire how much personality is packed into 49 minutes. This one’s a hit for bedtime giggles or a Presidents’ Day classroom listen.
