About This Audiobook

In 'Mustard Seed', Laila Ibrahim weaves a poignant tale of three former slaves returning to the plantation that once held them captive. The narrative, spanning decades, is a profound exploration of trauma, resilience, and the complex bonds of sisterhood. Bahni Turpin's narration is a standout, bringing each character's voice to life with nuance and emotion. Her ability to capture the South's cadences and the subtle shifts in dialect across generations is nothing short of masterful. What sets this audiobook apart is its unflinching gaze into the long shadow of slavery, balanced with tender moments of healing and hope.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Listening to 'Mustard Seed' was a deeply moving experience. Turpin's narration is so compelling, I found myself forgetting she was reading and instead, being fully immersed in the lives of these women. The pacing is steady, allowing the story to unfold organically, much like a slow, healing river. Ibrahim's prose is lyrical, yet unadorned, perfectly suited to the story's gravity. My only critique is that the ending feels a touch too neat, given the raw, messy nature of the narrative. But this is a minor quibble in an otherwise powerful listen.
