She nails the Yiddish and Hebrew phrases without overdoing the accent, grounding the story in authenticity without resorting to caricature. The production is crisp, with just enough ambient texture (distant church bells, rustling parchment) to immerse you in 1096 France without drowning out the dialogue. But the story’s pacing is where it stumbles slightly—there’s a lull in the middle, a stretch of dialogue-heavy scenes that drag when compared to the high-stakes opening and climax. That said, Weil’s decision to focus on Elvina’s internal struggle over graphic violence pays off; the horror here is psychological, not physical, and it lingers. If you’re looking for a children’s audiobook that treats its young audience as capable of grappling with weighty themes—faith, fear, the cost of survival—this delivers. If you prefer fast-paced action with clear heroes and villains, you might find it too quiet. For me, it was a slow-burning candle in a dark room: unsettling, but impossible to look away from.
