About This Audiobook

Matt Clayton doesn’t just retell ancient myths—he breathes new life into them, stripping away the dusty academic veneer to reveal the raw, visceral stories that shaped cultures. This isn’t your high-school textbook’s mythology; it’s a journey through the underworlds, battlefields, and divine caprices of the Greeks, Egyptians, and Vikings, told with a modern edge that makes the supernatural feel eerily tangible. JD Kelly’s narration is the secret weapon here, his voice deep and measured but never monotonous, shifting between thunderous authority and intimate whispers with effortless precision. The pacing never drags, even in dense passages, and the production quality ensures every clash of swords, whisper of the dead, or roar of the gods lands with immersive clarity. If you’ve ever wanted mythology that feels less like a lecture and more like a campfire story told by a raconteur who knows exactly how to keep you hooked, this is it.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I approached *Mythology* with skepticism—another collection of ancient stories retold? But Matt Clayton’s knack for stripping these myths down to their emotional cores while keeping their grandeur intact won me over fast. The Egyptian section, in particular, shines, turning dry hieroglyphic tales into something pulse-pounding. JD Kelly’s performance is a masterclass in vocal acting; his rendition of Odin’s riddles in the Norse segment actually made me lean in closer, and his gravelly tone for Greek underworld figures sent a shiver down my spine. That said, the transitions between myth systems can feel abrupt at times, like hopping between radio stations with no warning, and a few recurring themes—divine trickery, inevitable doom—start to blur together by the third act. Still, the audiobook’s strengths far outweigh these minor hiccups. By the end, I found myself Googling the original sources just to see where Clayton took creative liberties, which is the highest compliment I can give. Perfect for listeners who want mythic weight without the scholarly hemming and hawing.
