Jennings' narration is a tour de force, capturing the essence of each character with remarkable versatility. His Wackford Squeers is a deliciously villainous treat, while his Smike is a heartbreaking embodiment of pathos. The pacing is brisk, keeping the 34-hour runtime from feeling daunting. However, some of the novel's more melodramatic moments can feel over-the-top, and a few of the secondary characters' arcs could have used more development. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise monumental audiobook experience. If you're looking for a classic that feels anything but, Nicholas Nickleby is an absolute must-listen.
