About This Audiobook

Osamu Dazai's semi-autobiographical novel, No Longer Human, is a gripping and unsettling exploration of identity, alienation, and the human condition. David Shih's nuanced narration brings to life the protagonist's struggles with empathy and connection, drawing listeners into a world of quiet desperation. The audiobook's distinctive tone is characterized by Shih's measured pace and emotional depth, perfectly capturing the protagonist's disconnection from the world around him.

As a coming-of-age story, No Longer Human is both a product of its time and a timeless classic, speaking to universal themes of disillusionment and the search for meaning. The narrative's fragmented, diaristic style lends itself well to audio, with Shih's voice weaving together the protagonist's observations and confessions into a haunting, introspective whole.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I was drawn into No Longer Human from the start, thanks to David Shih's understated yet powerful narration. His delivery perfectly captures the protagonist's emotional numbness, making his rare moments of vulnerability all the more impactful. The pacing is well-balanced, with Shih expertly conveying the protagonist's inner turmoil. One minor quibble is that some of the supporting characters feel a bit one-dimensional, but this is largely a product of the narrative's focus on the protagonist's inner world. My only other criticism is that the production could benefit from a slightly more dynamic sound design to underscore the protagonist's growing despair. Overall, however, this is a superb adaptation of a challenging and thought-provoking novel.
