About This Audiobook

Grace Palmer’s *No Secret Like Nantucket* unravels like a well-worn nautical map left too long in the sun—faded edges, cryptic markings, and a destination that pulls you under. The Benson family’s summer idyll on Nantucket unravels when a found bundle of letters, a rusted locket, and a name from their past resurface in a dusty attic corner. Palmer’s prose is sharp, suffused with the briny tang of New England summers and the quiet rot of old resentments. This isn’t a mystery that hinges on whodunit; it’s about the slow, insidious way the past clings to the present, gnawing at relationships like salt on a wound. The audiobook’s pacing mirrors that tension—languid at first, then creeping, then relentless, as the Bennsons’ carefully constructed facades crack under the weight of what they’ve buried.

What sets this apart is Palmer’s refusal to romanticize the island. Nantucket isn’t just a postcard backdrop here; it’s a character that watches, judges, and occasionally swallows people whole. Susan Boyce’s narration amplifies that duality. Her voice shifts seamlessly from the brittle cheer of a 1950s housewife to the guttural despair of a man confronting his father’s betrayal, all while maintaining a steady rhythmic pulse that makes the audiobook feel like a series of waves—sometimes lapping gently, sometimes crashing. The production is crisp, with no distracting compression or tinny reverb, letting Palmer’s dialogue and descriptions shine. If you’re after a story where the island itself feels like a silent accomplice, this is it.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I started *No Secret Like Nantucket* expecting another sun-drenched family drama with a dash of coastal charm. What I got was a slow-motion car crash of a read, one where the real wreckage isn’t the plot but the way Palmer peels back the layers of a family’s self-delusion. Susan Boyce’s performance is the secret weapon here. She nails the clipped, performative politeness of the Benson women during their afternoon teas—those moments where you can practically hear the unspoken ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ hanging in the air—while also conveying the raw, physical collapse of a man like Walter Benson when his carefully curated past splinters. Her pacing is masterful, especially in the final act, where the audiobook’s runtime becomes a mercy; you need those pauses to breathe after the gut-punches. That said, the middle act drags a bit. The first third is so meticulously atmospheric that the story risks getting bogged down in its own setting, like a sailboat caught in doldrums. I found myself wishing for a firmer editorial hand to trim some of the nautical descriptions (do we really need a paragraph on the texture of a lobster trap’s netting?). The ending, while satisfying, also feels slightly too neat for a story that’s otherwise so unflinching in its portrayal of generational damage. But these are minor quibbles in what is otherwise a standout listen. If you crave audiobooks where the narration feels like an uninvited guest at the family dinner—observant, judgmental, and impossible to ignore—this is your book.
