I’ve listened to dozens of military novels on audio, but Once an Eagle stands apart—largely due to Grover Gardner’s exceptional performance. His voice carries the dignity the story demands without slipping into pomp or melodrama. He gives Sam Damon a grounded, almost understated presence, which makes his moments of moral clarity hit even harder. Massengale, by contrast, is rendered with just the right edge of slick detachment, making their ideological clash feel intensely personal. The novel’s pacing is deliberate—it’s not a thrill-a-minute war romp but a deep dive into leadership, loyalty, and the slow corrosion of institutional values. There were moments, especially in the middle section, where the political maneuvering drags slightly, and the sheer volume of military jargon might lose some listeners. But push through: the payoff in the final act, particularly during the Vietnam sequences, is devastating and profound. The audio production is crisp, with no hiccups in pacing or volume. This isn’t escapist fiction—it’s a challenging, necessary listen for anyone interested in the cost of command. Not perfect, but unforgettable.
