I’ll be honest—I picked up *One-Shot Harry* expecting a straightforward noir homage, but what I got was something grittier and more layered. Phillips doesn’t just drop Harry Ingram into a murder investigation; he drops him into a city on the brink, where every interaction is laced with the threat of violence or the quiet humiliation of racism. The forensic photography angle is more than a gimmick: Harry’s job—capturing crime scenes with cold precision—mirrors how he moves through the world, observing but never quite safe. When he’s framed for a crime he didn’t commit, the stakes feel brutally personal. Leon Nixon’s performance is *almost* flawless. His Harry is world-weary but not defeated, and he nails the rhythm of Phillips’ dialogue, especially the rapid-fire banter in jazz clubs. My only gripe? A few secondary characters blur together in his delivery—some of the white cops and politicians could’ve used more distinct vocal shading. The pacing drags slightly in the middle during a subplot involving union corruption, but the final act more than makes up for it with a climax that’s equal parts explosive and heartbreaking. If you love crime fiction that doesn’t let its heroes (or its audience) off easy, this is a standout. Just don’t expect neat resolutions—like the best noir, it leaves you with the weight of the world Harry’s still carrying.
