About This Audiobook

Only One Coffin thrives on contrasts—centuries-old sorrow clashing with irrepressible charm, gothic melancholy wrapped in wry humor. A.J. Truman crafts a vampire tale that sidesteps clichés, focusing not on fangs and bat transformations, but on emotional resurrection. The premise—two vampires forced to coffin-share at a supernatural retreat—sounds like a supernatural sitcom setup, but it’s rooted in real ache: our protagonist is still raw from losing a lover to slayers, and every sarcastic retort is armor. Enter the world’s most obnoxiously cheerful vampire, whose relentless warmth threatens to thaw centuries of frost. It’s a slow burn that simmers with tension, not just romantic, but existential—what does it mean to let someone in after centuries of withdrawal? Nick J. Russo’s narration elevates the material with precision and feeling. He gives the grieving lead a low, world-weary tone that gradually softens, while the bubbly co-vampire is all bright cadence and playful inflection—never grating, always endearing. The audiobook’s tight runtime works in its favor, delivering a complete emotional arc without overstaying. Truman doesn’t over-explain the lore; instead, intimacy drives the story. This isn’t a vampire epic—it’s a chamber piece about learning to live again, with enough dry wit and heart to satisfy both romance fans and literary fiction listeners looking for substance beneath the fangs.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went in expecting campy vampire fun and left stunned by how deeply I cared about these characters. Nick J. Russo is exceptional here—his voice work isn’t just good, it’s essential. The protagonist’s voice is layered with subtle exhaustion, pauses weighted with centuries of grief, and Russo doesn’t oversell it. Meanwhile, the perky vampire could’ve been a caricature, but Russo balances his cheer with quiet vulnerability, especially in later scenes. The chemistry is audible, which is rare in audiobooks. Pacing is tight—4.5 hours feels perfect. That said, the middle sags slightly; a few internal monologues repeat the same emotional beats. And while the Hotel Draugr is evocatively sketched, I wanted more texture—ambient sounds, even subtle ones, could’ve deepened the atmosphere. Still, the emotional payoff is earned. The final 30 minutes gave me chills—not from horror, but from hope. This isn’t just an LGBTQ+ romance; it’s a meditation on survival disguised as a cozy paranormal escape. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s ever needed time—and someone—to heal.
