Onyx Storm

I went into *Onyx Storm* expecting a fantasy romance with dragons, and left with a book that felt more like a dystopian thriller with a side of flighty, fire-breathing taxis. Violet’s journey from underdog to someone who might actually survive this godforsaken war college is nothing short of riveting, and Yarros’ ability to weave personal stakes into the larger conflict is masterful—her fight scenes are visceral, her dialogue snappy, and her villains legitimately unsettling. The romance, thankfully, avoids the dreaded insta-lust trope; Violet and Xaden’s push-and-pull feels earned, even when their chemistry borders on pyrotechnic. That said, the audiobook’s pacing is a double-edged sword. Some of the early academic scenes drag in narration, making the 24-hour runtime feel longer than it needs to. And while the multi-voice performance is a standout, Walker’s portrayal of Violet occasionally flips into whinier territory when the protagonist’s frustration peaks—it’s a minor quirk, but one that jolts you out of the immersion. Still, the payoff is worth the stumbles. By the time you hit the third act’s gut-punch twists, you’ll be clinging to your headphones like Violet clings to her dragon, desperate to know how the hell anyone survives this mess.
