His Rick is a weary everyman with a spine of steel, and his Tina crackles with dry wit even as the ship’s hull groans around them. The real star, though, might be the *dogs*. Craven writes them with such specificity (one’s a nervous herder, another a loyal bruiser) that their reactions to the chaos feel like a Greek chorus of fur and teeth. The pacing is where this audiobook shines—and occasionally stumbles. The first act’s slow burn (stockpiling supplies, assessing threats) is *brilliant*—it’s like watching a chess master set the board. But the midsection sags slightly under repetitive survival beats (how many times can someone debate rationing water?), and the villainy leans a touch cartoonish in the final act. Still, the payoff—a climactic sequence involving a lifeboat, a flare gun, and a morally gray choice—had me gripping my headphones. The sound production is flawless: ambient storm effects never drown out Pierce’s dialogue, and the editing ensures the tension never flags. If you love stories where preparation meets unpredictability (and don’t mind a few eye-rolls at the ‘lone wolf’ prepper rhetoric), this is a white-knuckle listen. Just maybe keep a life jacket handy.
