I’ll admit: I approached *Otis* skeptical that a baby zombie pigman could carry a full story. Two hours later, I was fully invested—not just in the action (which is snappy and inventive, especially the minecart chase in Chapter 4), but in Otis himself. Dr. Block’s writing shines when it leans into the absurdity of the premise while grounding it in real pathos. The scene where Otis tries to ‘adopt’ a villager, only to be shooed away like a stray, hit harder than it had any right to. That said, the middle act drags slightly during the Nether detour—it’s visually cool but feels like a mandatory pitstop rather than organic storytelling. Mark Sanderlin’s performance is the glue holding it together. His Otis voice—somewhere between a toddler’s lisp and a raspy growl—should be annoying, but it’s weirdly endearing, like if Gollum had a sugar rush. The supporting cast gets distinct treatments too: Baby Zeke’s high-pitched bravado contrasts perfectly with Herobrine’s echoey, condescending drawl. My only nitpick? The sound effects occasionally clash with the narration (a well-timed *clang* during a fight scene got buried under dialogue in Chapter 7). Still, the audiobook’s charm lies in its refusal to talk down to its audience. It’s silly, yes, but never dumb—and that’s a rare treat in kids’ adventure audiobooks.
