I’ll admit: 36 hours is a daunting ask. But *Patria 1978-2010* earns every minute by refusing to be a passive lecture. Deaglio writes like a prosecutor building a case, stacking anecdotes—like the time Silvio Berlusconi allegedly sent a singing telegram to a rival—or dissecting how the *Mani Pulite* scandal played out like a soap opera, complete with betrayals and last-minute pardons. The book’s structure mirrors Italy itself: messy, digressive, but somehow cohesive in its chaos. Mastrodomenico’s performance is a revelation; he doesn’t just read, he *performs*, nailing the shift from outraged indictment to wry amusement when recounting, say, a politician’s bizarre obsession with AC Milan. That said, this isn’t for the casual listener. Deaglio assumes familiarity with Italian politics, and while he explains key players, the sheer volume of names (and nicknames) can overwhelm. The pacing also stumbles in the final act, where the post-2000s sections feel rushed compared to the meticulous early chapters. And if you’re squeamish about cynicism, be warned: Deaglio’s view of Italy’s elite is *bleak*—less a critique than a eulogy for a country that swapped ideology for spectacle. But that’s the point. By the end, you’ll either be furious, fascinated, or both. For me? It’s the best kind of history: the kind that leaves you Googling footnotes at 2 a.m., half-convinced the whole thing must be satire." "tags": [ "Italian political corruption deep dive
