That said, this isn’t an easy listen. Freire’s prose is dense with jargon—‘praxis,’ ‘conscientização,’ ‘dialogical action’—and while Hendrickson’s pacing helps, there are moments where the audiobook demands you hit pause to unpack a sentence. The production is clean, but I wished for more dynamic audio cues (subtle background music or tonal shifts) to break up the heavier sections. Still, the payoff is worth it. Freire’s dissection of how oppression is taught—how the powerful convince the powerless that their silence is virtue—is chillingly relevant, whether you’re a teacher, a student, or just someone who’s ever felt crushed by a system that claims to ‘educate’ you. My only real gripe? The lack of supplementary materials (a PDF with key terms or discussion questions would’ve been gold). But as a call to arms for rethinking education? Unmatched.
