Her reading of the titular parrot in “The Case of the Murdered Macaw” is a masterclass in comedic timing, and she sells the emotional gut-punches just as deftly when Jolene’s curse forces her to confront a killer’s feline accomplice. That said, the pacing occasionally stumbles in the later stories, where Johnson’s tendency to lean on exposition drags the momentum. The first handful of tales crackle with snappy dialogue and tight plotting, but by the midpoint, a few entries start to feel like filler—more serviceable than standout.
