Piece de Resistance

Sophie Amoss’s narration is the secret ingredient that makes *Piece de Resistance* crackle with life. She nails Lexi’s sharp, self-deprecating humor without letting the character drown in bitterness, and her rendering of the French countryside is so vivid you’ll swear you’re inhaling the scent of lavender and woodsmoke through your headphones. The first act stumbles slightly under the weight of too many contrivances—Lexi’s abrupt abandonment mid-competition feels manufactured, and the chateau’s inheritance arrives with the subtlety of a soufflé collapsing—but once the story settles into its rhythm, the payoff is undeniable. The secondary characters, especially the gruff but tender-hearted groundskeeper and Lexi’s no-nonsense grandmother, add depth without veering into caricature. Production-wise, the audio quality is pristine, with only a few moments where the microphone bleed during outdoor scenes threatens to distract. My biggest critique? The audiobook’s runtime feels padded; a tighter edit could’ve shaved off 20 minutes without sacrificing the story’s heart. Still, this is a feast for fans of uplifting fiction with just enough bite to keep it from being saccharine. Amoss’s performance alone makes it worth the listen.
