Alan Turton’s narration is the glue that holds *Pilgrim* together—no small feat when the story’s emotional engine is a knight who’s lost more than he’s willing to admit. Turton’s voice is a chameleon: gruff when the knight’s armor is rusted tight, weary during the endless marches, and eerily serene when the story lingers on the ghosts of the dead. The way he handles the knight’s fractured German dialect is particularly striking, giving the character a lived-in roughness that feels authentic, not imposed. That said, the audiobook isn’t without its hiccups. At times, the pacing drags during the middle act, where the journey’s monotony risks becoming too much of a slog—though Lüthi’s writing does eventually pull the story out of that rut. The production quality is spot-on, with no distracting pops or cuts, but I wished for a bit more dynamic range in the battle scenes; they could’ve been more visceral, more *loud*. That nitpick aside, the narration elevates what’s already a gripping story. Lüthi’s refusal to romanticize the crusades is refreshing, and the knight’s internal conflict—between the faith that drove him to war and the emptiness he feels now—is the kind of psychological weight that lingers. The supporting cast, from the cynical physician to the zealous squire, are all vividly drawn, and Turton gives each their own distinct cadence. If you’re looking for a historical epic that doesn’t just rehash the same old tales of honor and glory, *Pilgrim* is a punch to the gut, delivered with the precision of a swordsman who’s already swung too many times.
