I've listened to many Clive Cussler audiobooks narrated by Scott Brick, and this entry in the Oregon Saga is a textbook example of his skill. Brick handles Cussler's unique blend of technical marvels, globe-trotting action, and shadowy villains with effortless authority. His voice modulations for the characters (especially the often-portrayed cynical Cabrillo) feel consistent and engaging, while the pacing is consistently tight, often pushing the listener forward at a breakneck speed. The sheer volume of information and action in these books can sometimes be a double-edged sword, but Brick ensures it's delivered clearly. The historical setting of the Mount Pelée eruption provides a grim backdrop, and the tension ramps up significantly when the crew must navigate its explosive aftermath and the mysterious secrets held by the Pernod family. The only minor critique is that, despite Brick's efforts, some of the plot reveals towards the end feel slightly telegraphed, but it doesn't detract significantly. Overall, this is an excellent, immersive listening experience that perfectly captures the grit and adventure of Cussler's world.
