Noble’s performance is *almost* flawless. His Arimnestos is a revelation—a voice that carries the scars of decades, equal parts philosopher and brawler. Where he stumbles slightly is in the female characters; their voices occasionally tip into caricature, a high-pitched lilt that feels jarring against the story’s grittiness. And while the pacing is largely relentless, the middle act sags under the weight of political intrigue in Syracuse. It’s necessary, but after the adrenaline of the sea battles, the courtroom maneuvering can feel like a trudge. Still, when the spear finally flies in the climax, it’s worth every minute. This isn’t a book for listeners who want their history sanitized or their heroes spotless.
