Prelude to Philosophy

I’ll admit, I approached *Prelude to Philosophy* with skepticism—how often do you get an audiobook about philosophy that doesn’t put you to sleep before the first chapter? But Al Kessel’s narration alone makes this worth the listen. His voice has a warm, almost conversational tone that makes Foreman’s dense material feel accessible rather than intimidating. I found myself genuinely engaged, especially during the sections on moral philosophy, where Foreman uses real-world dilemmas to tease out abstract ideas. The pacing is tight, too; there’s no meandering filler, and the book moves at a clip that keeps you hooked without feeling rushed. That said, I do wish Foreman had spent a bit more time on existentialism—it’s a glaring omission in an otherwise well-rounded intro. And while Kessel’s performance is stellar, I occasionally caught myself wishing for a touch more vocal variety during the heavier philosophical passages. Those quibbles aside, this audiobook delivers exactly what it promises: a no-BS guide to philosophy that’s as entertaining as it is educational. If you’ve ever wanted to dip your toes into the pool of philosophical thought but were intimidated by the deep end, this is your life preserver.
