About This Audiobook

Saul David’s *Prince of Pleasure* isn’t just another biography of a Georgian rake—it’s a full-throttle dive into the glittering, corrupt underbelly of 18th-century Britain, where power moved in brocade waistcoats and ruin lurked in gaming hells. This isn’t the sanitized history of kings and battles; it’s a warts-and-all portrait of a man whose influence reshaped British society, politics, and scandal culture. David stitches together diaries, gossip, and legal records to craft a narrative that crackles with the same wit and depravity as the era itself. If you’ve ever wondered how a single man could bankrupted nobles, outmaneuver prime ministers, and bed half of London, this is your backstage pass to the spectacle.

The real magic here is David’s eye for the telling detail—like the time the Prince of Wales (yes, *that* Prince of Wales) commissioned a portrait of himself in a French curl and a robe that cost more than a working man’s annual wage. Sam Devereaux’s narration is the perfect foil for all this decadence: his voice drips with the aristocratic drawl of an era where even a sneer sounded like a power move. The pacing keeps you gripped, whether he’s recounting a duel at dawn or a late-night brawl in a Covent Garden brothel. This isn’t history as a dusty lecture; it’s a binge-worthy drama where every chapter delivers a new outrage.

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Prince of Pleasure* expecting a dry recounting of royal excess, but David and Devereaux turned it into a full-contact sport. Devereaux’s narration is a masterclass in vocal performance—his imitation of the Prince of Wales’ affected drawl is so spot-on it’s almost uncanny, and his knack for slipping between aristocratic sneers and working-class backtalk kept me hooked. The production is crisp, with subtle sound design that subtly evokes the clink of brandy glasses or the roar of a London mob when needed, without ever overpowering the story. That said, the book isn’t without flaws. David’s tendency to name-drop every minor nobleman or mistress occasionally threatens to derail the narrative, and at 16 hours, the pacing drags during a few of the Prince’s less consequential gambling sprees. But these are minor quibbles in a story that’s otherwise as addictive as a night at a Georgian hellfire club. If you’ve ever wanted to eavesdrop on the most scandalous era of British history, this audiobook delivers—with style, swagger, and just enough filth to keep things interesting.
