I’ll admit I was skeptical going in—another Civil War-era novel? But *Reconstructed* burned through my preconceptions like a match to dry kindling. Vernon’s narration is the kind of performance that makes you forget you’re listening to an audiobook; he doesn’t just read the words, he inhabits them. His portrayal of a disgraced Union officer turned schoolteacher in South Carolina is especially haunting, the weariness in his voice a perfect counterpoint to the fiery idealism of the Black activists he encounters. The pacing is relentless, which is both a strength and a slight drawback—some chapters feel like sprints, leaving little room to catch your breath. At one point, I had to rewind because the emotional punch of a lynching scene hit so hard I missed a key line. That said, the production is crisp, with no jarring edits or audio quirks, and the emotional payoff in the final act is worth every breathless moment. If you want history that doesn’t flinch from the ugliness but also refuses to leave you in the dark, this is your book. Just be ready to stay up late—once you start, stopping isn’t an option.
