Rekindled

When I first pressed play, I was immediately struck by Barbara McCulloh’s ability to make the Rockies feel alive. Her voice carries a warm, grounded quality that feels like a trusted friend telling a story around a campfire. She differentiates the characters with just a whisper of accent or a change in tempo, which is especially effective in the heated arguments between the protagonists and the softer, reflective moments of prayer. The production is clean, and the occasional soundscape—crackling fire, distant thunder—adds texture without distracting from the narrative. The plot itself is a compelling mix of historical hardship and spiritual longing. I loved the way Alexander doesn’t shy away from the brutal realities of frontier life, yet she threads hope through every chapter. The pacing does stumble a bit in the middle, where some of the pastoral descriptions linger longer than necessary, but this also gives space for the characters to breathe and for the listener to soak in the setting. A minor gripe: a few background noises, like the wind gusts, are louder than the dialogue at times, requiring a quick volume tweak. Overall, the audiobook delivers an emotionally resonant journey, and McCulloh’s performance makes the love story feel both intimate and expansive. If you enjoy historical romance with a strong faith component and a narrator who respects the material, this is a rewarding listen.
