The narration is a standout—Ari Fliakos brings sharp, earthy energy to the male lead, while Julia Whelan’s softer, trembling tones capture the protagonist’s fragility. Sparks’ own voice adds a haunting gravitas during the ghostly sequences, making the audiobook feel like a private conversation with the author. The story’s core is a slow-burn connection between a grieving woman and a man who seems to know her better than she knows herself, but the real magic lies in how the audiobook handles the emotional crescendos. When the protagonist confronts her past, the layered narration and carefully timed pauses make every word resonate. However, the plot’s reliance on a time-loop mechanism feels a bit contrived, and the secondary characters’ motivations are underdeveloped, which occasionally undermines the narrative’s emotional stakes. Still, the audiobook’s lush descriptions and immersive sound design make it a standout in Sparks’ oeuvre, especially for fans of psychological romance with a touch of the uncanny.
