I’ll admit, *Rules for Werewolves* took me by surprise—not because it’s flawless, but because it’s *alive* in a way most literary dystopias aren’t. The audiobook’s production leans hard into its punk ethos: Podehl’s narration has this rough, almost breathless quality, like he’s telling you the story between drags of a cigarette in a dimly lit safehouse. Ezzo, meanwhile, delivers the quieter moments with a haunting stillness that makes the chaos around her feel even more unhinged. Their chemistry sells the book’s central tension—this is a story about people who *need* each other but aren’t sure they can trust each other, and the narration mirrors that push-and-pull perfectly. That said, the novel’s fragmented structure won’t be for everyone. Lynn’s writing thrives on repetition and circular logic (the titular “rules” recur like mantras), which can feel brilliant in short bursts but occasionally drags when the pacing stalls. And while the ambiguity of the worldbuilding is intentional, there were moments I wished for just a little more concrete stakes—some scenes blur together in a haze of survivalist routine. But the payoff comes in the details: a dumpster-diving scene that’s weirdly poetic, a character’s offhand remark about “the last good meal” that guts you, or the way the audiobook’s sound design (subtle echoes, distant sirens) pulls you deeper into the grit. It’s not a tidy listen, but it’s one that lingers—like the scent of smoke on your clothes after a night you can’t quite remember.
