Erandus isn’t your typical hero—he’s a man drowning in debt, forced to make one last high-stakes trade that could either free him or bury him deeper. The worldbuilding is where this story truly shines: a society where dragons are currency, status, and sometimes prey, with a hierarchy as brutal as any feudal system. The audiobook’s pacing is relentless, mirroring Erandus’s own frantic struggle, though I wish Stadler had given us more glimpses into the fractured world beyond the islands—just a few more details about the cities they’re fleeing to would’ve elevated the stakes. Morris’s narration is a masterclass in making the fantastical feel grounded. His portrayal of Erandus’s internal conflict—caught between hope and cynicism—is pitch-perfect, and he handles the dialect-heavy dialogue with ease. The dragon sounds are immersive, though they occasionally overpower the quieter, more intimate moments. My biggest critique? The ending felt abrupt, as if Stadler prioritized thematic resonance over narrative closure.
