I’ll admit, I approached *SEAL’s Angel* with skepticism—military romances can too easily become either a fetishization of trauma or a sugarcoated fantasy. But St. James sidesteps both traps by making Jake’s emotional armor *specific*. He’s not just ‘damaged’; he’s a man who’s trained himself to see vulnerability as a tactical error, and Dawn doesn’t ‘fix’ him so much as she outmaneuvers him. Their banter is one of the book’s strongest suits—playful but barbed, with Dawn’s wit acting as a scalpel to Jake’s defenses. That said, the middle act sags slightly when the conflict pivots to an external threat that feels a touch contrived compared to the internal stakes that hooked me. I wanted more of their emotional push-pull and less of the generic ‘danger looms’ tension. The narration, though, is *flawless*. Lucy Rivers makes Dawn’s dialogue sing with a mix of humor and steel, but it’s Aaron Shedlock who steals the show. His Jake isn’t the usual growly alpha—there’s a deliberateness to his delivery, like every word is measured for risk. The production choices amplify this: background noise is minimal, forcing you to lean into the performances, and the pacing in intimate scenes is *perfect*—slow enough to savor, but never indulgent. My only nitpick? A few transitions between narrators could’ve been smoother; there’s the occasional half-second pause that pulls you out of the moment. But that’s a minor quibble in an otherwise immersive listen.
