She’s messy, contradictory, and often her own worst enemy, which makes her triumphs (and stumbles) feel earned. The audiobook’s strength lies in how Lawrence embodies this: her voice cracks with authentic pre-teen scorn when India rolls her eyes at her mother’s vanity, but softens into something fragile during her late-night calls to her dad, who’s always *just* too busy. The pacing is deliberate, almost claustrophobic in the first act, mirroring India’s trapped frustration. Some listeners might chafe at the lack of ‘action,’ but the tension is psychological, building to a confrontation that’s more devastating for being *quiet*. That said, the ending feels slightly rushed—Wilson ties up India’s emotional arc neatly, but after so much simmering resentment, the resolution lacks the raw edge of the earlier chapters. And while Lawrence’s character voices are stellar, her delivery of the adults occasionally tips into caricature, especially India’s mother, whose shrillness might grate on repeat listens. Still, these are minor quibbles. What *Secrets* does brilliantly is validate the fury of being a kid who’s *almost* old enough to see the cracks in the world but not old enough to fix them. For parents listening alongside their kids, it’s a gut-check; for young listeners, it’s a permission slip to feel their feelings, even the ugly ones. Just maybe not in the carpool line.
