There’s a scene midway where Hayden’s voice cracks on a single word (‘*mine*’), and I actually paused the audiobook to process it. That’s how good Clarke is: he turns what could’ve been cheesy possessiveness into something raw and desperate. The story’s biggest strength is its economy. At under two hours, there’s no filler—no unnecessary side characters or dragged-out misunderstandings. But that brevity also highlights its one weakness: the ending feels *too* neat, like Black rushed to tie up the emotional loose ends. I wanted more fallout, more groveling, especially given how high the stakes felt. And while Clarke’s performance is stellar, his Perrie voices (when she speaks) occasionally dip into a breathiness that borders on caricature.
