Wolf’s writing excels in the quiet moments: a shared cigarette on a fence post, the way a door slams shut like a period at the end of an argument. The audiobook’s pacing mirrors this—lingering where it counts, then galloping through the lighter scenes with the urgency of a storm rolling in. Emma Wilder’s narration is the standout. She gives the protagonist a voice that’s equal parts weary and wicked, especially in the snarkier exchanges (her delivery of *“You always were a coward, Remington”* is *chef’s kiss*). Sean Masters, meanwhile, plays Remington with a restraint that makes his rare outbursts land like gunshots. My only critique? The flashback scenes sometimes blur together in tone—Wilder and Masters don’t always distinguish young vs. present-day voices clearly, which occasionally muddles the timeline. And while the ending satisfies, the final confrontation between the leads wraps up a touch *too* neatly for a book that otherwise thrives on messiness.
