He nails the cadence of frontier speech without slipping into caricature, and his delivery of Kelton’s stark dialogue lands like a hammer blow. The story itself is a slow burn that never loses its tension. Kelton avoids both the maudlin sentimentalism of some Westerns and the cartoonish brutality of others, instead focusing on the quiet moments of moral collapse—like a hunter realizing too late that he’s not a provider, but an exterminator. My only gripe? The production occasionally feels too spacious, as if the recording studio swallowed some of the punchiness of the dialogue. And while the ending is earned, it’s also abrupt in a way that might frustrate listeners craving resolution.
