Myriam Berger’s performance is the soul of this audiobook. She nails the tone shifts—her voice drops to a conspiratorial murmur when describing leshy spirits lurking in the underbrush, then snaps to sharp, mocking laughter when Baba Yaga’s hut creaks to life. The narration never feels like it’s reading; it’s like eavesdropping on a local storyteller in a dimly lit tavern, spilling secrets between sips of mead. Berger’s pacing is impeccable, too. Even when Nelson’s writing gets a little dry (looking at you, the Domovoi’s laundry list of household rules), her delivery keeps the momentum from stalling. That said, the book’s brevity is both a strength and a flaw. At just over an hour, it feels like a teaser reel for a feast you haven’t been served. The Domovoi and Baba Yaga get their full due, but other spirits—like the Rusalka or the Vila—get glossed over in a few cursory lines. The lack of deeper cultural context also stings; a listener unfamiliar with Slavic traditions might leave more confused than enchanted. Production-wise, the audio is crisp but sparse—no atmospheric sound design to speak of, which makes the world feel flatter than it should. Still, as a gateway drug for folklore lovers, it delivers the goods.
