I’ve sat through enough audiobooks narrated by folks who treat square footage like a meditation retreat. Gilbert Pearl doesn’t do vague. His delivery in *Small Scale, Big Impact* lands like a carpenter’s level—precise, no-nonsense, with just enough edge to keep the dry chapters from becoming a snooze. He nails Wilder’s conversational tone, especially in sections where the author walks you through reconfiguring a closet into a nook office or turning a loft ladder into a storage fortress. The pacing is brisk without rushing, which is impressive for a book stuffed with measurement specs and layout diagrams (yes, Pearl references them aloud with efficient clarity). My one quibble: Wilder’s case studies lean heavily on Pacific Northwest builds, leaving me wishing for a chapter on how these hacks translate to desert climates or dense urban lots. And while Pearl’s performance is stellar, the audiobook’s runtime feels like it’s edging closer to the 2-hour mark due to a couple of abrupt transitions between topics. Still, if you’re renovating a closet, a backyard cottage, or a camper van, Wilder’s insights—and Pearl’s delivery—will have you measuring twice and cutting once.
