His Southern drawl is understated, never cartoonish, and Emma Wilder matches him beat for beat with a heroine who’s smart, guarded, and refreshingly self-aware. The dual narration is seamless, making their growing intimacy feel organic rather than manufactured. The slow build works in the story’s favor, though the middle sags slightly—there’s a stretch where farm chores, neighbor drama, and repetitive inner monologue slow the pace. Still, the audiobook production is crisp, with subtle ambient sounds (crickets, distant thunder) that enhance the Southern atmosphere without distracting. What sets this apart is how the romance feels earned—Luke’s physical healing mirrors his emotional growth, and the sex scenes, while steamy, serve the character development. My only critique? The brother’s role fizzles out too abruptly, leaving a loose thread that could’ve added more tension. Still, this is a standout in contemporary sports romance—less about the game, more about what comes after.
