Her performance is a masterclass in restraint: when Lettie’s voice drops to a whisper during a confrontation with the local ‘rogue’ (a man so slick he could sell swamp water as perfume), you lean in—not because she’s weak, but because you’re waiting for the strike. The production quality is flawless, though I’ll dock half a point for a few scenes where the male voices blur together in pitch; a touch more distinction between the love interest and the villain would’ve sharpened the tension. Blake’s writing shines in the details—the way Lettie’s gloves stick to her palms in the humidity, or how the town’s women wield silence like a scalpel. The pacing stumbles slightly in the middle, when a subplot about a missing heirloom feels like a contrived delay, but the final act more than makes up for it with a confrontation that’s equal parts erotic and brutal. What stays with you isn’t the romance (though it’s steamy enough to fog your headphones), but the question of whether Lettie’s rage or her desire will define her.
