Space Detectives

I’ll admit, I side-eyed *Space Detectives* at first. Another space-themed kids’ book? But within five minutes, Paul Panting’s narration had me hooked. His performance is *expressive without being exhausting*—a rare balance in children’s audiobooks. The robot sidekick, B1-N4RY (pronounced “Binary,” because of *course* it is), could’ve been grating in lesser hands, but Panting gives it a deadpan delivery that makes its literal-mindedness genuinely funny. My favorite moment? When B1-N4RY “scans” a suspect by slowly reciting their grocery list. It’s the kind of absurdity that feels *earned*, not forced. The cases themselves are hit-or-miss in terms of depth, but that’s kind of the point. The “dog lost in space” plot is pure fluff, but the “stolen pocket money” mystery has a surprisingly sweet twist about sharing. My only real critique is the pacing in the final act—it wraps up *so* quickly that the emotional payoff for the protagonist’s arc (yes, there’s one!) feels rushed. And while the sound design is minimal, the occasional *whoosh* of a spaceship or *blorp* of an alien adds just enough texture to keep young listeners engaged. Is it *high art*? No. But as a parent who’s suffered through enough dreary “educational” audiobooks, *Space Detectives* is a breath of fresh, silly, zero-gravity air. Just don’t blame me when your kid starts demanding a robot sidekick.
