Eleanor McCormick’s narration is the standout here, and it’s a damn good thing. Her voice for Nora Zvezda—equal parts brilliant and brusque—is so spot-on it’s like eavesdropping on a real scholar’s late-night research binge. The dry wit in Nora’s internal monologue lands perfectly, especially when she’s debating whether to trust a too-charming archivist or dismiss him as a distraction. But McCormick’s real triumph is the supernatural tension. The way she modulates her tone during the eerie moments—softening into a hush during the spear’s first unnatural hum, then sharpening into urgency during chases—makes the paranormal feel tangible. It’s a rare audiobook where the narration *enhances* the story rather than just carrying it. That said, the romance subplot feels like it was shoehorned in. Nora’s chemistry with the love interest is built on a single prophetic line and two conversations that read more like fanfic than organic connection. The production is solid, with minimal background noise, but the sound mixing isn’t flawless—some of the spear’s otherworldly hums dip too low, forcing me to lean in. Still, these are minor quibbles in a story that’s otherwise a gripping, genre-blending ride. If you love historical mysteries with a side of creeping horror and a narrator who sells the stakes, *Spears and Shadows* is your next obsession.
