The audiobook’s strength lies in its structure: Larson dismantles the staff engineer role into digestible components (technical leadership, project selection, organizational navigation), then reassembles them into a coherent strategy. Shaula Evans’ delivery enhances this—her tone is measured, almost clinical, which prevents the advice from feeling like hype. That said, her cadence occasionally flattens during the book’s denser sections (like the “architectural leverage” chapter), where a touch more vocal emphasis could’ve helped distinguish key points from examples. The most valuable moments? Larson’s brutal takedowns of common misconceptions—like the idea that staff engineers are just “seniors with more meetings” or that influence scales linearly with title. His anecdotes (e.g., the “invisible promotion” trap, the “career moat” framework) are gold, though I wished the audiobook included more real-world dialogue examples to illustrate the political nuances.
