Opal, our sharp-tongued, broke-as-hell protagonist, isn’t here to scream and run; she’s here to *survive*, and her voice—both in writing and Häcke’s performance—is what sells it. The narrator’s delivery is *electric*: she makes Opal’s sarcasm cut like a knife, and when the house’s influence seeps in, her tone darkens into something almost inhuman. It’s a rare audiobook where the performance doesn’t just complement the text but *elevates* it. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. Harrow’s world-building is rich, but the lull between the initial horror and the final act’s chaos drags just enough to test your patience. And while the German edition’s narration adds a delicious layer of unease (Häcke’s pronunciation of Kentucky slang is *chef’s kiss*), some listeners might find the occasional code-switching jarring. But the payoff? Worth it. The finale is a blood-soaked, emotionally brutal gut-punch that lingers like the scent of old wood and something *wetter*. If you crave gothic horror with bite, a heroine who’s no damsel, and narration that crawls under your skin, this is your audiobook.
