I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at the ‘city girl meets cowboy’ setup—until Kelli Tager’s narration sold me on the heroine’s sharp, self-deprecating humor in the first five minutes. Her performance is the secret weapon here, turning what could’ve been a generic fish-out-of-water trope into something fresh. She nails the balance between vulnerability and sarcasm, making the heroine feel like a real person, not a romance archetype. Stephen Borne, meanwhile, leans into Sutton’s gruff exterior without overdoing the ‘alpha male’ schtick; his delivery in the more introspective scenes (like the barn confrontation in Chapter 12) adds layers to a character who could’ve easily been one-dimensional. The story’s strength lies in its refusal to rush. Aster lets the conflict breathe—whether it’s the heroine’s career ambitions clashing with Sutton’s rootedness or the town’s judgmental gaze. That said, the middle act drags slightly with repetitive internal monologues about ‘trust issues,’ and I wished the side characters (especially Sutton’s sister) had more depth. The production quality is flawless, though, with seamless transitions between narrators and no jarring volume shifts. The steamier scenes benefit from Borne’s low, deliberate pacing, though they might feel tame for listeners used to higher heat levels. Ultimately, *Stay* is for fans of slow-burn romances where the emotional stakes outweigh the physical—just don’t expect a tidy resolution to the town’s class divides, which linger like an unanswered question.
