I wasn’t sold on another Stink Moody adventure until I heard Maggie Vera turn the phrase “thumb wrestling” into something that sounds like a WWE pay-per-view intro. Her performance is the reason this audiobook works so well—she doesn’t just read the lines; she *performs* them. Stink’s hyper, scattered energy is balanced by Vera’s ability to dial it down just enough when he’s plotting his next move, and Judy’s exasperated sighs are so perfectly timed they should come with an ASMR trigger warning. The sound design deserves its own standing ovation, too; the thwack of thumbs colliding with the squelch of a banana split hitting the mat feels like you’re right there in the ring (or, more accurately, the Moody kitchen table). That said, the book’s brevity works against it in one key way: the tournament’s climax feels rushed, as if the final match is over before the crowd has time to erupt. A few extra minutes of buildup might’ve made the payoff land even harder. And while Vera’s vocal range is impressive, I could’ve done without the occasional over-enunciation of Stink’s dialogue, which sometimes veers into cartoonish territory. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise winsome, high-energy listen. If you’ve got a kid (or a kid at heart) who loves underdog stories, ridiculous competitions, and narrators who sound like they’re having the time of their lives, this is the audiobook you’ve been waiting for. I dare you to listen without flexing your own thumbs by the end.
