About This Audiobook
Alisha Klapheke’s *Stolen by the Shadow King* isn’t your usual dark fantasy romance—it’s a lush, high-stakes duel of wits and wills set between a crumbling Upperworld and a scheming Underworld. The magic binding both realms is unraveling, and the Shadow King, a brooding monarch with a taste for power and poetry, has only one solution: steal the heart of a mortal queen. His target? Lyrica, a sharp-witted ruler whose kingdom is the last bastion of light. The twist? She’s the only one who can see through his illusions—and the only one he can’t charm. Klapheke crafts a world where every whispered spell feels tangible, where political intrigue simmers beneath the surface of sensuality, and where the cost of survival is steep. The result is a tale that’s equal parts rebellion and surrender, wrapped in the kind of danger that clings to you long after the last chapter.
Narrator Caitlin Kelly elevates every moment with a voice that shifts effortlessly from icy disdain to breathless surrender, her delivery mirroring the duality of the Shadow King himself. She doesn’t just read the lines—she *lives* them, whether she’s sneering at a rival’s treachery or dragging out the tension in a charged, wordless exchange. The production amplifies this, with a soundscape that lingers on the rustle of silk, the echo of distant horns, and the crackle of magic like static on a radio. It’s immersive to the point of sensory overload, but in the best way—like being trapped in a gilded cage with a king who knows exactly how to break you."
"review": "As someone who’s listened to more than her fair share of dark fantasy romances, I’ll admit I was skeptical when *Stolen by the Shadow King* promised yet another brooding monarch and a mortal woman who’s somehow the key to saving (or dooming) the world. But Klapheke’s worldbuilding is so vivid, so *alive*, that I was hooked within the first twenty minutes. Lyrica isn’t your typical chosen-one heroine—she’s flawed, stubborn, and refreshingly skeptical of the Shadow King’s motives from the get-go. Their dynamic is what makes the story: a push-and-pull of insults and desire that feels raw and unpredictable. The magic system is another standout, blending courtly politics with something eerily reminiscent of quantum theory—where spells are less about spells and more about bending probabilities to your will. It’s clever without being pretentious, and it makes the stakes feel *personal* in a way that generic “save the world” plots don’t.
That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle act, where the political maneuvering drags more than it should. A few side characters feel like placeholders, and the romance’s progression from enemies-to-lovers is a touch too abrupt—like skipping a few chapters of a romance novel to get to the good stuff. Kelly’s narration is the real MVP here, though. Her voice for the Shadow King is so deliciously smoky and arrogant that I half-expected to find myself blushing at my desk. The only off note is her occasional over-enunciation in quieter scenes, which pulls you out of the mood just enough to notice. Still, the production quality is top-notch, with a sound design that makes the Underworld feel like a place you could get lost in—if you dared. If you crave romance that’s equal parts danger and decadence, this one’s worth the time."
