Erin Bennett’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook. She nails the Levin sisters’ voices—Blair’s clipped, no-nonsense tone; Jessie’s weary, resigned drawl; Kirby’s defensive, almost petulant rasp—without ever slipping into caricature. The production is crisp and clean, with just enough ambient sound (the hum of a screen door, the lapping of waves) to ground you in that sun-bleached Nantucket setting. Bennett’s pacing is impeccable, too; she lets the silences breathe, letting the weight of the characters’ histories settle like dust in the afternoon light. That said, *Summer of '79* isn’t without its flaws. The novella’s brevity sometimes feels like a constraint—Hilderbrand’s usual lush descriptions are stripped down to the bare bones, leaving a few emotional beats feeling underdeveloped. And while the story’s themes of family and forgiveness are timeless, the resolution lands a little too neatly, as if Hilderbrand wanted to tidy up her characters’ lives before the season ended. Still, if you’re a fan of Hilderbrand’s work, this is a satisfying epilogue; if you’re new to her, it’s a tantalizing taste of what makes her prose so addictive.
