Straga’s narration is the secret weapon here—she doesn’t ham up the dialogue or over-emote, which makes the rare moments of genuine terror land with more impact. Her performance of the title story, where a prospector’s greed meets a desert entity’s patience, is a masterclass in understatement. That said, the collection’s uneven pacing drags in spots. The middle third, a trio of interconnected tales set in a cursed orchard, starts to feel repetitive, as if Killan is retreading the same ground without adding new layers to the myth. The production, while clear, also suffers from occasional muffled dialogue in outdoor scenes, a minor but noticeable flaw. Mostly, though, the audiobook earns its chills through sheer authenticity. These aren’t just stories about superstition; they’re stories about how humans *become* superstitions in landscapes that don’t care if we live or die. If you’re the type who wants their horror with a side of dust and history, this is a solid listen—just don’t expect every tale to hit the same mark.
