Eidem writes trauma with a light touch, avoiding melodrama but never sugarcoating Autumn’s PTSD. Kirall’s devotion isn’t just romantic; it’s *feral*, and the audiobook leans into that duality. Ian Gordon’s performance is the standout—his Kirall sounds like a warrior who’s spent centuries waiting for *her*, and the way his voice drops into a growl during protective moments? *Chef’s kiss.* Jennifer Gill matches him beat for beat, especially in the quieter scenes where Autumn’s fear and hope war in the same breath. That said, the pacing isn’t perfect. The middle act drags slightly as the plot pivots from survival to domesticity, and I wished for more friction in the romance—Kirall’s possessiveness is *almost* critiqued, but not quite enough to satisfy my inner feminist. The secondary characters (and Griffin Murphy’s narration of them) feel underutilized, too; a subplot about Mondu’s politics gets short shrift.
